La Ballade à Béatrix

"La Ballade à Béatrix" or "Ballad to Béatrice" is also the name given to a learning path relating to the final episode in the history of the "Château de St-Cergue" which was destroyed during the Burgundian Wars. The path offers a marvellous panorama over Lake Geneva.

"La Chronique de Saint-Cergue", or Chronicle of Saint-Cergue, was written by Frédéric-Jacques-Louis Rilliet (1794 - 1856) following a stay in Saint-Cergue. He tells of the occasion when he received from a village elder an old piece of furniture which was said to be the only remnant of the chateau. In this piece of furniture he found an old parchment from which the chronicle was said to have been taken. The story recounts the final chapter in the history of the chateau of Saint-Cergue which was torn down during the Burgundian Wars. While the characters in this story are imaginary, with the exception of Charles the Bold and the dukes of Savoy, the political, military and geographic context is accurate according to the author. Numerous place name are mentioned which still exist today and let the reader locate where events were supposed to have happened. The humanity of the characters brings them closer to the reader and makes them more sympathetic, thus turning the story into a legend of Saint-Cergue.
The hike is in the forest around Saint-Cergue and the path is marked with 16 panels relating the 16 stages in the novel.
